Summary

Duties

  • Maintain a safe, functional, and comfortable environment for residents, staff, and visitors.

  • Carry out minor repairs and routine maintenance throughout the care home.

  • Help ensure the building, equipment, and outdoor areas are well maintained and safe to use.

  • Support health and safety checks and reports larger maintenance issues when required.

  • Assist with the general upkeep and smooth day-to-day operation of the care home facilities.

  • Good knowledge of hard/soft landscaping practices.

  • Problem solving skills.

  • Previous experience in a similar role.

Your Duties

    • General Maintenance and Repairs: Carry out minor repairs such as fixing doors, tightening handles, repairing furniture, replacing light bulbs, and addressing small plumbing or electrical issues where safe to do so.

    • Safety Checks and Hazard Prevention: Regularly inspect the building and grounds for potential hazards (e.g., loose flooring, faulty equipment, damaged handrails) and resolve issues promptly to maintain a safe environment for residents, visitors, and staff.

    • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that essential equipment such as beds, wheelchairs, hoists, and other mobility aids are in good working condition, reporting or arranging repairs when necessary.

    • Grounds and Outdoor Maintenance: Maintain outdoor areas including pathways, gardens, and parking areas to ensure they are tidy, accessible, and safe for residents and visitors.

    • Decorating and Minor Improvements: Carry out small decorating tasks such as painting, touch-ups, and minor refurbishments to keep the care home environment pleasant and well-maintained.

    • Supporting Health and Safety Compliance: Assist management with routine maintenance checks such as fire alarm testing, emergency lighting checks, and ensuring clear fire exits in line with health and safety requirements.

    • Moving and Setting Up Equipment: Help move furniture, beds, or equipment safely when rooms are being prepared for new residents or maintenance work.

    • Waste Management and Storage: Ensure maintenance materials, tools, and equipment are stored safely and assist with appropriate disposal of waste or broken items.

    • Contractor Liaison: Support external contractors during maintenance visits by providing access to relevant areas and ensuring work is completed safely within the care home environment.

    • Record Keeping: Maintain basic maintenance logs and report larger repair issues to management or external maintenance providers.

    • Assist with the induction of new starters in accordance with Ashfield Nursing Home’s policy.

    • Be polite and respectful in communication with staff, residents, or external visitors.

    • Develop effective working relationships with other employees within the service.

    • Work in cooperation with members of the multi-disciplinary teams to maximise opportunities for people in the service.

    • Promote the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of residents at all times. This includes maintaining an environment free from abuse, neglect, or harm.

    • Remain vigilant to any signs or indicators of abuse—whether physical, emotional, financial, sexual, or neglect.

    • Act in accordance with the organisation’s safeguarding policies and procedures. 

    • Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of those individuals one supports.

    • Attend all statutory training, meetings and any others as directed by a manager.

    • Knowledge of, and work within, the Fundamental Standards.

    • Understand the regulatory framework that governs the service, including the role of CQC and their requirements.

    • Commit to achieving the relevant qualifications with the role.

    • Understand and follow all policies and procedures relevant to the role.
